VALPOLICELLA & SOAVE WINES

BEST VALPOLICELLA AND SOAVE WINES

During your Veneto stay, decompress and join our ‘Best Valpolicella and Soave wines’ tour!

These wines are produced in one of the most picturesque and distinctive Veneto areas beginning at the Lake Garda opposite Lombardy.

Both regions use blends of different grapes,  instead of wines from single varieties, characteristic of Eastern Veneto.

The Adige River, which runs parallel to the long lakeshore, marks the beginning of a wide range of vineyards of the Valpolicella, stretching eastbound down to the walled Medieval town of Soave and on to the border with Slovenia, where the country ends.

Taste with Walks inside Italy diverse wine varieties of these areas and discover the essence of the Veneto wine culture.

Your ‘Best Valpolicella and Soave wines’ itinerary starts in the morning at Piazzale Roma in Venice or a different Veneto town.

Get in the luxury private car with your guide, enjoy the route to Valpolicella, and take advantage of the overall beauty of the spectacular landscape around you.

Marvel at the series of fan-shaped valleys separated by winding streams, running between lush rolling hills carpeted with dense vineyards at medium altitude and cherry trees as you approach the Lessini’s Regional Park, at the northernmost boundary.

Our first destination is the Valpolicella Classica subzone. It is renowned for four different Doc denominations and two DOCG top wines, locally produced since the Roman Age from Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Molinara grape varieties.

Finally, in 1968 this area widened up to the surrounding plain eastward, Valpantena, and Valpolicella Orientale, in total 59.000 acres.

However, the ‘Classica’ sub-zone is also renowned for the variety of landscapes characterizing this prestigious area, which encompasses the small communities of San Pietro in Cariano, Pedemonte, Negrar, Fumane, and Sant’Ambrogio di Valpolicella.

In 1405 Verona province submitted to the Republic of Venice that gave new impetus to agricultural activities, especially massive goat and sheep breeding, hay production, seasonal vegetables, abundant wild game, and extensive wine production.

Venetian nobility purchased large plots of arable land and had stylish Villas built, which today add so much charm to this beautiful place.

The family-run winery selected for your ‘Best Valpolicella and Soave wines’ tour stands in a scenic and cozy small town, celebrated for the vine parcels producing premium wines, thanks to the passion and knowledge handed down to generations over the decades.

The four specific denominations are made from the same grapevines, although styles differ from each other.

The basic wine is Valpolicella Doc, a cherry-flavored and purple-red wine, but the flagship of the appellation is Amarone DOCG, considered one of the best aged red wines in the country, as much as Barolo or Brunello di Montalcino.

The etymology derives from ‘amaro’ referred to the name of dry regional wines mentioned in a Verona guidebook by the learned novelist Scipione Maffei in 1732.

It will be a treat to taste fresh food and different wines with the producers. Do not hesitate to apply for questions, it’s fun!

Your private ‘Best Valpolicella and Soave wines’ tour continues with a gourmet lunch. Passionate gourmets should not miss the Enoteca Regionale della Valpolicella, a traditional restaurant with a prestigious showcase of the finest Verona wines.

The afternoon moves forward with an exciting experience in the charming Soave DOC area, whose name brings to mind old traditions dating back from the Medieval Age.

The fascinating town of Soave originated as a Roman center whose name derives from “Soavi” tribe, which settled down here in the 6th cent. AC after the fall of the Roman Empire.

The intact square-shaped walls date from the 14th century and encircle a residential village of 7000 residents, a few historic churches, a decorated Medieval Palace of Justice, and a massive brick Castle with a tall tower overlooking the small town below.

Despite the short distance from Verona, the landscape of this vineyard area is unique: the two major centers of the Classico subzone, Soave and Monteforte d’Alpone, are located at the bottom of a wide semi-circular basin comprising three valleys forged by volcanic activity millions of years ago, with silty clay and limestone soils on the plain and basaltic and tufaceous rocks on the steep hills, where winemaking has constantly developed since ancient times.

The main varietals are Garganega and Trebbiano di Soave that generate crispy and fine white wines.

You will be delighted by the tasting of each wine in a winery within the walls. It will enhance your first-hand experience and benefit from exclusive access to private estates.

At the end of your full-day tour, you drive back to your departure site, in the company of our wine expert.

NEW! Walks Inside Italy suggested options

Would you like to learn more about regional food specialties? Instead of the afternoon Soave tasting, you can visit a Rice Mill in southern Verona with our guide.

That area has been ideal for rice growing since the Renaissance age when the Republic of Venice imposed duties on this cereal imported from the Far East. In 1992 the Riso Vialone Nano Veronese varietal was awarded the IGP quality title by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture!

We spend a few hours in the rice fields and listen to the fascinating story of the ground preparation, the flooding of plots and sowing in April, the rice peeling process, known as ‘monda’, and the harvest.

Finally, we walk to the factory and watch the rice processing cycle in its varied phases, still operated by the old artisanal tools for diverse rice varieties, or by modern machinery for the regular ones.

You will taste a rice-based appetizer, and learn about the incredible range of food products deriving from such a small grain.

Due to technical reasons, we recommend to join this tour from April through October.

Apart from ‘Best Valpolicella and Soave wines’ we suggest you more tours designed for food&wine lovers such as TREVISO: A SUBTLE CHARM

At www.walksinsideitaly.com you will find more wine tours, about Chianti or Franciacorta area

MORE ABOUT
THIS TOUR

The term Valpolicella is not only referred to as a celebrated wine area. It is worth taking an inspiring walk through the Communes of Classica zone, relax in the suspended mood of the place.

Fumane is known for a few highlights, like Villa della Torre, modeled on a Roman house with a large garden that provides access to three overlapped courtyards.

As for natural beauties, the Parco delle cascate is a natural reserve with several beautiful waterfalls, one of the most attractive venues in Lessini Park.

Moving to San Pietro in Cariano, we come across Villa Sarego Broccoli.
It is an unfinished masterpiece by the architect Andrea Palladio, which now houses the Santa Sofia winery, an appropriate product for such a reputed monument.

Over time Sant’Ambrogio della Valpolicella has been honored by the presence of Dante Alighieri lineage, when Pietro, son of Dante, bought the Serego estate with vineyards in 1353.

Today the Alighieri family is running the winery, for a total of twenty-one generations, and their wines are a reference point for the whole province.

The nearby Pieve di San Giorgio is a real treat, due to its ancient history and gentle flair.

Excavations proved the ruins of a pagan sanctuary.

The 12th cent. architectural design displays the proportions and the simplicity of the Romanesque style. Everything is so neat: the light glides gently over the local stone used for the entire building. Step inside through a lovely round-shaped front door, marvel at the delicate frescoes depicting St. Peter’s highlights of his life.

This inspiring land is home to Amarone and Recioto wines, made from the same grapes and different techniques.

Ripe grapes rest on wooden shelves in ventilated attics for four months until berries shrivel into raisins. Eventually, the fermentation process converts their sweet and thick juice into a dry, high alcohol wine, known as Amarone.

On the contrary, a sudden spring frost or a bad storm would stop yeasts activity and impart the wine the typical sweetness of ‘Recioto‘.

Soave Doc area stands next to Valpolicella, dominated by Garganega grape.
Due to the thick skin and the acidic content of the berries,
Garganega also undergoes the same air-drying process as in Valpolicella, for the production of the excellent Recioto di Soave, the first wine to be agreed with the DOCG regional appellation in 1998.

Berries are rich in acidity, with thick skin protecting them from molds and vine diseases. You can taste the way sourness prevents sugar from being too intrusive to the palate. The oak barrels aging makes the wine more balanced, rounder, and more complex. The best heady Recioto flavors are dry figs, honey, citrus fruit peel, and peach jam.

Needless to say that we expect you to book our tour and try us!
