EXPLORING CANNAREGIO
Cannaregio, one of the six sestieri (neighborhoods), is a pristine part of town, yet to be discovered by mass tourism, and mostly inhabited by genuine Venetians, unlike the other areas of Venice.
Passing the colorful open-air market, we shall explore the Jewish Ghetto, with its tall, tower-like buildings, spacious and lively “piazza” called Campo del Ghetto Nuovo. We will also admire the façades of the five lavishly decorated Baroque-Rococo Synagogues (one for each different “nation:” German, French Ashkenazi, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, and finally “Levantine,” meaning Greek and Turkish).
We’ll walk down the wide, silent, luminous canals, through Campo dei Mori with its unusual statues of Moorish merchants, to the Gothic church of la Madonna dell’ Orto. This church hosts powerful huge canvases by Tintoretto, in particular The Final Judgment and the Adoration of the Golden Calf (the great painter is buried here).

THIS TOUR
EXPLORING CANNAREGIO
If your traveling philosophy is not just “touching the highlights,” and if you like walking in quiet areas without too many souvenir shops around, a stroll into Cannaregio, the second largest sestiere of Venice situated in the Northwest part of town, can be an ideal “escape” from the crowds of St Mark’s Square and Rialto. Venetians like to inhabit this part of town, where the streets and canals are generally wider, and the houses are a bit newer.
Residents also enjoy chatting and shopping along the busy Strada Nuova (“New Street,” dating back to the second half of the 19th century), the only conventional “street” in Venice.
