LAGOON & BURANO SLOW
BURANO & LAGOON – SLOW TOUR
Venice mirrors her beauty in the calm waters of a 212 square miles Lagoon. Its shallows, perilous to navigate, were for long centuries the natural defense from enemy attacks, allowing Venice’s long political independence. It communicates with the sea through three inlets, today protected by the MOSE dams.
Salt was extracted and traded along the rivers – Piave, Brenta, Sile – that used to empty into the Adriatic Sea at this point. Redesigned by human intervention during the 15th and 16th centuries, when the rivers were diverted, it still provides a good quantity of fish, shells, and seafood for local consumption and for export.
Our journey in the north Lagoon follows some of the deeper natural canals that meander through it. You will learn about the peculiarities of this fragile ecosystem, the largest wetland in the Mediterranean basin.
On our way to Burano, we pass by the islands of
San Michele, today Venice’s burial ground, Murano – the island of glass – and touch some minor abandoned islands – San Giacomo, Madonna del Monte. After about 30 minutes we reach the two islands of Mazzorbo and Burano, connected by a wooden bridge, ready to proceed on foot.
Burano has inspired generations of painters and photographers and, no matter the season and weather, will enchant you with the vibrant colors of its houses and away-from-the world atmosphere. Fishing boats and nets, lace-makers sitting at work contribute to the picturesque and unique mood of the island. We shall stroll around looking for the best picture opportunities and stopping here and there to absorb its charm.
If shopping is a must for you a stop at a family run bakery to purchase the simple but delicious local S-shaped cookies, and a visit to one of the lace-making ateliers will be included in our island discovery.
Besides fishing and fowling, lacemaking became, by the 16th century, one of the main economical supports of the island. You will hear the history of Burano lace, its typical techniques and its ups and downs. You will get in touch with some of the few women, mostly elderly ladies, proudly carrying on the old tradition.
Before we get ready to make our way back to Venice, a break at one of the cafés on the lively main street will provide a moment of rest and the occasion for your guide to tell you a bit more about the other islands.
